You're Never Too Old to Learn....An Anthem Opinions Editorial

Getting to Learn  Another Aspect of
Chinese Culture

There's an old saying....

"You're Never Too Old to Learn"

About a week ago, I received a phone call from Charlie Wong, one of the original founders of the Sun City Anthem  I.C.C.C. (International Culture Connections Club).

It was during that phone call that Charlie asked if he could buy me lunch, which I readily accepted !

When my wife and I first moved to the Las Vegas area in 2005, we, like most new residents, became "tourists" and put a few miles on the "four wheeler" to see the sights of our new home town.  We knew that there was more than The Strip, but other than becoming familiar with Sun City Anthem, we believed that if this was going to be our new home, we owed it to ourselves to...

...and experience the many aspects of the Las Vegas valley...

...and one of those attractions was "Chinatown".

That was over 10 or 11 years ago, and had never been back since...

...and hearing that, Charlie, said, "THAT'S WHERE WE'RE GOING"...to see the "new & improved" Chinatown.

Before I explain that experience, I have to tell all of you a short history of my getting to know a number of Asian individuals in the SCA community.

I've known Charlie for a long time, dating back to the time Rana Goodman of Anthem Today & The Vegas Voice and I were asked to compose an article about I.C.C.C. for The Spirit magazine.

I'm sure neither Rana nor I will ever forget the experience of searching through pictures of the Club's event history and meeting with a number of their members in order to compose that article.

It was fun, as well as a learning experience, to bring that Club to the attention of Sun City Anthem.  It was, in my experience, a culture many in the community were not familiar with prior to their relocating to Sun City Anthem.

Rana and I were then invited to a wonderful party in which we met so many  members of the I.C.C.C. who thanked us and opened their arms in friendship.

Time would pass and that "learning experience" would expand to meeting a number of people in the Filipino community.  Tito Fernandez and his wife, Grace, would be so gracious...even sending me home with a basket of fruit after we met.

At that time, if I can recall, Tito was an officer in the "Filipiana Club".

I would eventually meet Carmello Beley, as a result of Anthem Opinions' "Mr. Fix-It" Forrest Fetherolf, and his special lady, Erlinda Pedrosa...

... and following a catastrophic typhoon in the Philippines, while still a part of The Vegas Voice, we all got together and produced a fundraiser in Freedom Hall with a number of local entertainers who graciously devoted their talent to a full house which resulted in raising a great deal of money for those who lost their homes and lives during that tragedy.

That would lead to meeting a lady named Dorothy Yu of the Chinese Heritage Club.

To say that Dorothy and I have become dear friends, is an understatement.

We normally speak once or twice a week and anyone who knows Dorothy....

...all 80 pounds of her...

...knows that lady, now in her 80s, packs a verbal "punch" and sense of humor that has endeared me to her for years.

I can't forget her husband, Jason, either !

Jason, who has battled health problems this past year, needs to get well not only for Dorothy's sake, but for mine as well.

I miss the Chinese noodles they brought to our home that people still ask me about, every time Dorothy's name pops up in the conversation.

So...

...over those years, I've had the chance to learn various aspects of the numerous Asian cultures that populate our Anthem community, and some time ago, Anthem Opinions composed an article about the Chinese New Year...what it means with the various "Years" of Dogs, Rats, etc.

With all that history in mind, Charlie took me to a restaurant in "The New Chinatown" and thank goodness he was there to read me the menu !

However, there was one aspect of the menu I did understand...or thought I did...the prices !

Though reasonably priced, the one aspect that caught my attention was that all of the prices ended in the number "8".

$2.88...$4.88...$6.88

...and so, I had to ask "Dr. Wong" what that was all about ???

And that brings me back to the statement I mentioned above:

Image result for you're never too old to learn

Charlie smiled and told me that Chinese numbers are spoken differently than in English...

Image result for chinese numbers

Image result for chinese numbers

...that  the number 8 has significance to the Chinese !

Image result for chinese number significance

It means...

MONEY....WEALTH & FORTUNE !

If the number 168 is used, it means...

WEALTH WILL FOLLOW YOU THROUGH LIFE !

...that you will often see the license plate on Chinese drivers containing the number...
Image result for chinese number significance

...and that all numbers have significance !

So, I asked Charlie if he would send me a few tidbits that I could share with our readers, and within a few hours, I became an "expert" at what certain numbers and other symbols mean to the Chinese members of our community.

Are you ready?

3...means you will have a good life.

4...is the symbol of DEATH

5...means you're "not sure or never"

9...means infinity...forever & ever !

Most Chinese buildings don't have a 14th floor...which means you're going to die there...while they do have a 13th floor !

The color Orange...symbolizes Gold & Wealth.

...and best of all, the Chinese always wish others "Good Luck & Long Life"...meaning it should also be filled with good business & money !

So, to you, Charlie Wong, thanks for the fun lunch, the best part of which was learning more of a culture that I knew so little about until arriving in Sun City Anthem...

...even though Charlie made me pay for the lunch !

(Just kidding, folks, Charlie paid...because I didn't have 88 cents !)

Most importantly, to all Asians in our community, thanks for the opportunity of getting to know a number you, and the "welcome mat" you've always extended to me and my wife over the years.

Looking at the Latest Sun City Anthem "Hoodwink"

Drain the Sun City Anthem Swamp
Don't Restock it with Sharks

Image result for draining the swamp

Many residents of the Sun City Anthem community received the following email a few days ago, likely in response the article written by Anthem Opinions and the Darcy Spears report.

Dear SCA Residents,
As I previously notified earlier this week, Bob Burch has resigned from the Sun City Anthem Board of Directors.  Under provisions of NRS 116.3103 (2)(c), the Board will exercise its responsibility to fill the vacancy left by Mr. Burch’s resignation until the next regularly scheduled election.
If you are interested in being considered by the Board of Directors for appointment to a position on the Board, please be sure to place your written request to General Manager, Sandy Seddon, no later than end of business on Friday, July 13, 2018.  Click Sandy Seddon to submit via email.  This correspondence should include your name, phone number and a brief statement as to why you feel you should be considered to serve on the Sun City Anthem Board of Directors.
Once the Board votes on this appointment, they will also vote on the re-organization of the Board and select its officers.

Rex Weddle
Acting Board President
Within a day of the Channel 13 report, Bob Burch, the Sun City Anthem president, resigned "for personal reasons".

Whatever the reason, he was part of THE MACHINE...

...and as we have documented on several occasions, wrongfully was omitted from the Removal election ballot by 2 votes, despite proof he should have been included.

Whatever his reasoning, one conclusion can be drawn...

He's gone...and...it's time to "move on".

When it was originally announced that his replacement would be chosen by a meeting of the remaining members of the Board, let's just say....

...the memories of a recent "replacement" immediately came to mind...

..namely choosing an individual, James Coleman, in a closed door session without allowing any person in the community to show interest in the position.

Coleman had literally no community involvement in his 19 year history of residing in the community with the exception of his assisting in the creation of the "African American Heritage Club" a few months prior to his appointment.

It made no sense, and many of us feared that method of choosing a replacement of a Board member, would set an ugly precedent...

...a MACHINE precedent, a political maneuver that would maintain the control of THE MACHINE.

It worked, and if you followed his voting record on issues, he has proven to be just that....MACHINE.

With that in mind, we now have another opening, and it first appeared that the same political ploy would be used, many believing they would  place defeated previous Board member, Aletta Waterhouse, back on the Board.

We found the possibility of a Board choosing a person who had not only lost in the previous Board election, but had also received 40% of the total votes cast in the Removal election to remove her...

..an insult....a slap in the face to every unit owner!

...that out of 7,144 homes, that was the best they could come up with to choose such a person for appointment ???

In our opinion that method of choice HAD TO STOP, and with the above memo it first appears that it did.

but...DID IT?

According the above email, any resident may submit their interest by way of an email to Sandra Seddon, the Sun City Anthem General Manager  and object of the recent Darcy Spears investigative report that showed how grossly overpaid her compensation is when compared with others in the state of Nevada.

What exactly did that notification solve

 NOTHING NEW !

It means they want to "make it look good" ; that's all it means.

Image result for make it look good

It's like offering to feed you, but charging you $250,000 a year for the privilege?

Sound familiar?

As of now, the Board will still make the decision in a secret backdoor meeting.

Our comment to that memo sent by "Acting President" Rex Weddle, is simply...

Image result for who are you kidding

Are you "playing" the community...again?

This community is sick and tired of the games being played that result in deception and loss of association funds made through decisions of a MACHINE.

If this Board wants to be completely transparent and show the community our concerns are unfounded, we might suggest to make the following alterations to that clever "backdoor deal".
Image result for suggestion box

First, make the names of those who wish to apply for the position public information along with the reason they would like to be appointed to the position.

Second, allow each individual to be interviewed separately and a IN PUBLIC SETTING.

Third, have pre-set list of questions for each person, ending with a final statement as to why they wish to obtain the Board position.

It would allow the community to know who wants the  job and why they do ... in their own words !

Finally, once the decision is made, not only should the decision be made public, but WHY that individual was chosen over the other candidates, as well as, why they eliminated the other candidates from consideration...

...and the vote total for the chosen candidate, summarizing who voted for that person, and who, if any, dissented.

This would allow the community to know the rationale for the decision, and most importantly, if the decision was impartial.

...and for any of you who desire to apply for the position in sending the email to Seddon, we strongly suggest you add this to request:

"Please send an acknowledgment of your receipt"

Why, because if you recall, 2 pages of petitions signatures were "missing" that would have placed Burch on the Removal ballot.

Then send us notification that you placed your name in nomination.

We'll keep the names on file.

That way, we might compare the qualifications of those who applied to the individual chosen.

The people must know who represents them and when a Board has the opportunity to choose a replacement, that this decision is acceptable and representative of the people....not a contrived method in which to maintain a MACHINE.

Remember too, NRS 116 also allows that NO REPLACEMENT be appointed.

  1. From Jim Mayfield...former Vice President & 2 Term Sun City Anthem Board Director...to...Anthem Opinions

The person appointed by the Board to fill the vacant seat on the Board will be critical to several decisions over the remainder of the current Board year.  Furthermore, the reality is that this person will have a distinct advantage in the next election.

In order for SCA homeowners to have a first-hand feel for each applicant for the interim position and their views, I recommend that the Board authorize the Current Events Club to host a debate between the candidates.  A live debate provides insights that written statements do not provide, and the candidates' responses cannot be prepared by third-parties.

I recommend the Current Events Club because, in my experience, it has consistently hosted the best organized, informative debate during the regular election process.    In addition, it is widely perceived as an independent group of homeowners who are not  subject to influence by the Board, General Manager or different factions within the SCA community.

The Board of Directors is granted the authority to appoint an interim director under Nevada law.  But, board members would do well to remember that effective governance is only achieved when a governing body has wide support of the governed.
  2. From Rana Goodman...to...Anthem Opinions

I could not agree with Jim more. This is an excellent idea.
    1. From Robert Nusser...to...Anthem Opinions

I'm wondering if we can find out IF the accounting firm was the one that hid those pages OR if the Board was responsible....either way SOMEBODY failed to perform their fiduciary responsibility.

I'm sure SOMEBODY has all the copies of the signature sheets where it can be reconciled to PROVE the fraud.

Until we find out, I wouldn't trust that accounting firm to balance my checkbook.
    2. Robert, the biggest joke is the "acting president" who wants to "appoint the new Board member" via backdoor deal meeting....a guy who also received 40% of the votes to recall him.

Anyone wonder why Aletta Waterhouse is being considered?

Both shared that same common total and well, "Birds of a Feather...."
      1. Good grief, here we go again with the half-truthed blogger who obviously gets his kicks out of deceiving a community, not withstanding his usual manner of making an ass of himself.

        He writes:

"Acting Board President Rex Weddle responded as follows to Mayfield, also sending his response to SCA bloggers.

Blogger Dick Arendt published Mayfield’s message but refused to publish Weddle’s reply, thereby assuring that his readers would see only the side of the question that Arendt wanted them to see.
         "

Well, Mr. Half-Truth, I never received anything from Rex Weddle (the guy who also had 40% of the votes to KICK HIM ASIDE), and I don't expect to since he and I are not exactly "drinking buddies", but after reading the response you received, in my estimation, this is merely a replay of how he and Seddon handled the Removal Election ballot...

...using an aspect of the law to HIS ADVANTAGE....which had the affect of DECEIVING the PEOPLE.

He could have done what Mayfield suggested, or he could have merely not appointed anyone. Both options are readily available, but somehow, we all know THAT'S NOT THE WAY THE MACHINE DOES BUSINESS.

And in bashing the Tobin request, Mr. Half-Truth must have been quite a lawyer.

After all, in this nation a person is innocent until proven guilty...

...but that certainly doesn't seem to apply to her, does it?

Unfortunately, Mr. Weddle , Mr. Half-Truth, & bunch should learn that the community is not as stupid and naive as they believe it to be.

Darcy Spears certainly confirmed how out of whack this community is in its spending habits.

Yes,WEDDLE AND BUNCH.. PLAYED US...and instead of showing good faith in opening up this important decision to a community, kept it a BACKDOOR deal.

I wish all of them would stop insulting the intelligence of people...it's as old as the hills, and is only working on those lacking common sense.
        1. From Yun Lee...to...Anthem Opinions

The BOD and GM just keep doing the same thing, year after year, and it’s doubtful you will see change benefiting ALL

The community and you see them taking care of themselves and that’s all they care about.  Some things never seem to change and  SCA residents continue to “bury their heads in the sand”

I do NOT understand that…at all!

Most don’t know much of anything about the operation and are too lazy to learn, they read and then do nothing,.,duh….

IF an assessment hits their pocketbook, THEN and only THEN will they wake up and it will be too late.

Thanks for all you do in trying to keep folks informed… they are totally unaware of how much time and effort you put into your web site/blog!
          1. From Patsy McCarthy...to...Anthem Opinions

Guess Weddle is up to his old tricks.  It’s his way or the highway.

Apparently, he will not even consider the suggestion that we have a town hall meeting where we can meet the candidates (or is it chosen candidate).

Jim Mayfield’s suggestion was on target and it’s an insult that Weddle has dismissed it.

We, the dues paying owners, have a right in the decision on who sits on our BOD.  It is not his decision but ours.

Then again, we have all been ignored for many years….so what else is new?
            1. From Patricia Yeamen...to...Anthem Opinions

              Dick,

I loved your comments about people applying for Board membership and keeping the proceedings public.

We Get Letters

Anthem Opinions receives many comments from individuals that we gladly post, but occasionally we get some that, in our opinion, are so profound and so thought provoking, that we choose to make a separate article.

This is one of those times.

Looking at Sun City Anthem
Through the Eyes of a Resident Who Cares

Image result for we get letters

by
Patricia Yeaman
Sun City Anthem Resident

I am not the most eloquent at writing or speaking, but hopefully I can get my points across in an easily comprehensive manner.

I watched the channel 13 report on the salaries paid to SCA executive employees.

This response to all we’ve seen and heard here in Anthem and now on Channel 13 news is directed at the current and past Board members (I will refer to those people as Board members only without further explanation) who have been responsible for the outrageous spending and poor management of our fine community.

It is not directed at our newest Board members who have not yet voted on such unbelievably reckless spending.

The Board members should be totally ashamed and embarrassed about the money they are dishing out to our employees while the floors in the Anthem building are so badly cracked and the grout is filthy!

The whole floor tile at Anthem needs to be replaced.

I am embarrassed to show the facility to friends!

The Anthem pool filter still must not be working properly because the whirlpool section is still full of diatomaceous earth and needs to be vacuumed out and the grout and tile around the top of the pool desperately need to be scrubbed with pumice or replaced.

The cell service here is hit or miss.

I spoke with a rep from AT&T, asking him if our community could be considered for installation of a cell tower.

He told me the HOA does not want a cell tower here.

What???

A new cell tower would take up no more space than a palm tree and would make our ability to communicate with friends and family a whole lot easier!

Oh!  And how about providing many more handicapped parking spaces at each of the community centers?

I see many residents (including me) walking with canes and walkers who have to park halfway into the parking lot, having to walk across the lot (and we do walk slower than healthy residents), finding it extremely difficult to avoid all the cars driving by, who aren’t looking where they’re going and aren’t looking for slow-walking pedestrians.

With all the dance and exercise classes offered, perhaps it should be remembered this is an adult community and a huge number of our residents are handicapped.

Could there be a little more compassion for the handicapped?

Most of them cannot participate in the numerous classes, but they do go to swim, play cards and participate in sit down types of activities. It would be a great service to them if they could park closer to the community buildings.

But...there doesn’t seem to be enough money for improvements as aforementioned..

But.....let’s buy new equipment for a TV station that is watched only by a handful of SCA residents.  That makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?

Let’s consider allowing a restaurant to come in without paying rent or contributing to the cost of necessary updates to the facility.

And by all means, let’s pay our general manager two to three times what other HOA managers and the Henderson and Las Vegas managers are making!

How dare (the Board members who voted in Sandy Seddon) offer her such an outrageous salary AND additional bonuses without so much as a job description in writing?  How dare the current Board members vote to keep her here on such a financially irresponsible salary!

Most of our Board members are extremely well educated individuals who claim to have experience in running large corporations or owning successful businesses.

 My question:

Did you spend all that time going to school because you have NO common sense and are unable to figure things out by yourself without what’s written in a book?

Or has the honor of serving on the SCA Board gone to your heads?

Have you developed the attitude of so many of our country’s politicians:

You’re in it for what you can get out of it?

Board Membership is a privilege.

This is NOT a dictatorship.

It is meant for you to work WITH the residents.  To make decisions in their best interest.

Now a question for the residents who have buried their heads in the sand.

It’s like they are thinking, “If I don’t see it, it doesn’t exist.”

Why did Bob Burch get voted back in to serve as a Board member, let alone president?!

The only way this community is going to thrive in the future is if more responsible decisions are made with regard to expenses (salaries, purchases, actual needs vs wants, etc.).

The next time we vote for new Board members, lets encourage our friends and neighbors to run for the positions.

Those who may not have Master’s Degrees or corporate experience.

Lets find one or two residents who have successfully run and managed their household finances (which, for some, could be quite a bankroll).

How about someone who has worked as a bookkeeper or someone responsible for their local PTA budget?

Someone who received their education partially by formal education, but also by the school of hard knocks?

This person would be intelligent, but also would have developed an abundance of common sense and a serious sense of right and wrong.

This person would have the ability and common sense needed in doing the research, compiling the relevant information, and then developing a plan to implement the necessary steps to move forward.

Someone who is driven to serve others.

  1. From John Yocum...to...Anthem Opinions

Has anyone made tallied our annual operational costs since we've gone to self management as compared to the annual cost before that time?

Such a comparison would be complicated because it would have to fairly account for deferred maintenance that occurred prior to start of self management and had to be picked up by the self management team.

Such a comparison, done fairly, is necessary to see whether the high salaries are worth the cost.

Supposedly, we hired the very best GM that money can buy.

Maybe we'd find that she is worth it.

I truly think the prior board decisions were made in the best interests of the community.

I think the board members had no personal gain from these decisions. Before we condemn the decision of prior boards, we should at least evaluate the results.
  2. John, every job has an economic worth.  May individuals don't understand that.

Its' called "supply & demand", the capitalistic system by which we live and have prospered for 242 years.

There was absolutely no reason as to why we should compensate any individual at twice the "going rate".

I think Pat Seaman did a wonderful job.

And John, I have been stopped by residents, and even strangers that don't reside in Sun City Anthem, and in 100% of the cases, those individuals complimented the Darcy Spears report and singled out Jim Mayfield and myself for having the courage to come forth and make the Las Vegas valley aware of the ridiculousness incomes we are paying our GM and top management.

It appears that other then just a few, the only supporters of her income and those of certain of her subordinates,  are those who authorized it, or who have little experience in the real business world.

For someone who does not think she is an eloquent writer, think again.

Pat, I think you hit the nail on the head regarding what is happening to our community with SCA board members, and  Sandy.

You have expressed the opinions of many residents.

        Thank you for your comments!

        1. From Carolyn Schmalz...to...Anthem Opinions

Hopefully Patricia will run for the board.

She certainly will have my vote!
          1. From Robert Lachford...to...Anthem Opinions

Kudos to Patricia Yeaman for her fine letter addressing issues specific to the elderly and handicapped residents may face going unnoticed by others in the community which hopefully may bring suggestions to the forefront which may be of value making their lives a bit more enjoyable in our community.

An example of the oversight or lack of concern for these folks was kicking the group that provided various medical supplies and advice to residents “off campus’ to allow a club to accept their space.

She also stressed the need for change of those on the Board.

Looking back, the largest  factors in stirring up local interest in how we are being taken is first the ridiculous costs of finding and then agreeing to pay in salary and benefits to the manager and her overpriced entourage by the 7 bumblers.

The second, somewhat a blessing in disguise, is the publicity received regarding the restaurant debacle, which stirred up enough resentment to force the wolves to withdraw their offer.

Many other examples of mismanagement are certainly evident, and enough heat seemingly caused one of the responsible parties to jump ship.

Now that we see how public outcry helped prevent another near disaster, it would serve our interests for all property owners to become more cognizant of where our dues are going.

The exit of one of those in the forefront is not enough to solve the problems we still have.

Is it time to return to professional management?

Do we need legal advice better serving our needs?

            Decisions we face!!!
            1. From Laura Shapiro...to...Anthem Opinions

Wonderfully written letter.  I couldn’t have said it better myself.

This is how so many of us living here feel, including myself.

Let’s clean this place up once and for all.

              Thanks again to Patricia.
              1. From Dorothy Albata...to...Anthem Opinions

I have a comment about your "slow walking" residents, handicapped or not.  How about taking responsibility for yourselves?

How does one explain people walking directly behind drivers, who are backing out of parking spaces?

Or, how about those that do the same thing gunning it in their cars behind a person backing out of a space?

Not pointing any fingers, but I was always taught to look before you cross.

The news gives us many incidents about pedestrians being hit by cars, because the pedestrian thinks that people should be able to stop on a dime to give them the right of way.

We are all seniors in this community.

Seniors, generally, don't have the same quick reflexes that they once had.

I'm not one to speed in our parking lots, but I see many irresponsible people, who will just walk in front of a moving car.

                HELLOI!

                Accidents do happen.

Dick – I think Patricia would be a great board member.

I liked and agreed with what she said.  She seems to have great common sense.
                2. And that's her problem Virginia, she has COMMON SENSE !
