Losing a Lovely Lady...is Losing Part of American History

Sun City Anthem Angel...Now a Part of God's HOA

We don't often make mention of those who have left us, but this is an exception.

According to Anthem Today, we lost Elizabeth Swann this morning...and I want to thank Rana Goodman for allowing me to publish these pictures from her forum.

Many of you may not aware of Elizabeth Swann... but The City of Henderson Certainly was....

..as Mayor Andy Hafen honored her with awarding this city plaque in May of last year.

I had the opportunity of meeting Elizabeth only once...a couple of years ago on a Friday evening while watching an evening concert at Anthem Center.

There she was, rocking away with the music with her daughter and dear friends, Sun City Anthem residents, Norm & Mary McCullough, who have watched over her for years in such a loving and caring manner.

Here she is with Mary McCullough.

Elizabeth Swann lived through World War I, Women's suffrage, the roaring 20s, a great depression, World War II, and  many years experiencing racial discrimination.

...and the Lord allowed her to witness the election of this nation's first black president.

Elizabeth Swann was 104 when she passed away today.

Anthem Opinions sends our deepest sympathy to her daughter, Hazel, and her "adopted" family, the McCulloughs.

Sun City Anthem Resident Wins Jackpot at South Point

B...I...N...G...O

This has been a tough year for the Stebbins family, but on Thursday it got a lot better !
A few months ago, we had a close call with  "NRS 116 Guru", Tim  Stebbins, having had a very serious medical issue, but like all tough Minnesotans, he's on the mend, and still attending every board meeting known to Sun City Anthem.

...and for those unaware of Tim, he's always been the "unofficial go-to guy" concerning Nevada Statutes when it comes to homeowners associations.

But...yesterday, another member of the Stebbins family, his wife, Claudia, took center stage...and the cash...at South Point's Bingo parlor.

Here's the newly crowned queen herself as she sits on a carriage during a trip to Malta.

And here's what she cashed in before she left.

What did she immediately do when she realized she was the sole winner of the jackpot?

She called her husband, Tim, and simply said....

"I'm gonna need a bigger purse".

Congrats Claudia....couldn't happen to a nicer lady !

Let us Entertain You...with a Bit of History

Love Honor and "Obey"

Word three, OBEY,  once agreed to by any woman as they marched down an aisle...sure has changed genders, hasn't it?

...but is was September 12, 1922.....91 years ago today...that the Episcopal Church in the United States voted 36-27 to delete that word from any further marriage service.

Prior to that time, if you wanted to marry, that was the price every woman had to pay to "tie the knot" in most religions....

...but...

Just where and when did that tradition start?

In jolly old England during the reign of Henry VIII, that where and when !

As we all know, Henry the VIII married six times, but it was after his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon in 1509 and the pope's refusal to grant him an annulment after 24 years of marriage, that Henry came to the conclusion that in order to call the shots on what was, and what wasn't, a valid marriage, no pope was going to make that decision.

After all, "it's good to be the king" !

...but by 1533, Henry, after trying again and again to persuade Pope Clement VII to "change his opinion" due to Catherine's inability to give him a male heir to his throne, he decided to take matters in his own hands and tell the pope he was no longer welcome as the head of the church in England.

Clement VII didn't appreciate his resistance; and in response, excommunicated Henry, saying he would face the fires of hell as a result of trying to tell a pope what to do.

Once again, Henry, in his correspondence to the pope...

...PS'd him by saying...

..."No Problem, Pope, I'll meet you there, pitchfork in hand....,,,but until that day comes, you stay in Italy where you belong, because this king just made you "an offer you can't refuse".....

..."that as of now, I'm the boss here in England".

...AND....when Pope Clement asked him by what authority we could make such a decree, Henry once again reminded him, "it's good to be the king"...

...that kings make decisions, while popes in those days were usually replaced after being burned at the nearest stake...after disagreeing with kings !

Of course having some cutie pie named Anne Boleyn in the wings didn't have a single thing to do with it; but Henry, in his new found "ecclesiastical" power, thought....

"Now that I make the calls...."

BUT...

"I better think this one out before I get married again", a dilemma that has lingered throughout the history of mankind...

...so he decided to place a new word in marriage vows...

...and you guessed it...

...the word was...

OBEY !

Well now, as time marched on, many people have come to believe that this word was always part of the deal, but it was all because of Henry VIII and his being a control freak.

Henry may have been the king, but even he knew that a queen had certain powers...that could be withheld...if he insisted on being a male chauvinist. So the easiest way to make sure that couldn't happen, was....

...make it the law !

Yet despite this "legal demand"  that the word "obey" be a part of each marriage ceremony, his success at enforcing it wasn't very good....

Then again...."It's good to be the king", and if a wife refused, she paid the price...legally.

....Anne Boleyn (#2) and Catherine Howard, (#5) chose not to "obey" and , were both beheaded; he divorced Catherine of Aragon (#1) and Anne of Cleaves (#4) for refusing to "obey", (#3), Jane Seymour, died shortly after giving birth to his only male heir; and Catherine Parr (#6) survived him.

And though the Church of England removed this word in 1922, the "royals" kept it in their ceremony for years until a lady named Diana Spencer, married the current Prince of Wales.

She said "No Way", he said "OK", and well, that marriage didn't seem to work out very well either, did it ?

Now we have a lady name Kate Middleton who is married to Prince William, and though "royals" have their traditions; Kate too, has said...

..."Uh-Uh, Will; you want some of this filet, now it's your turn to "OBEY."

And so, we now have a future king of England changing the "royal Georgian" diapers to prove my point !

So...the word "obey" has somehow managed to change its meaning over the centuries...from a man demanding it of a woman...to a woman expecting it from a man !

And I, like many other married male creatures who have partaken in this  "holiest of unions", have sadly become a victim of the ages as well in that changing tradition.

...and I/we all owe it to Hank 8, the guy who was delusional  enough to demand a woman to "obey" ...and actually expect her to do it !!!!

Feeding the Clan...Clams ! Can Crow Be Far Behind ?

Hey Vic....You'd Have Been Better Off with a "Clam" Sandwich

You would think that after months of an empty restaurant, someone would get the message......"clams ain't gonna cut it"...

...in a community that had a belief that they were going to get something that the average guy would eat...or...could afford !

Oh Vic, it's time you realized that "champagne wishes and caviar dreams" are as appropriate here as opening a MacDonald's in a Gucci and Ralph Lauren "discount" outlet !

Every other day, this place gets FREE advertising in some Sun City Anthem publication, whether it's the Spirit or an "official" eblast from our "informed" Association President, or some blog owner who keeps believing he's the voice of "the people"...who eat clams !

I have to know this...

When was the last time you awoke from the couch after a nap and said to yourself...

"I  gotta have a clam!"

When any of you were in the working world, how many of you  dined with fellow associates on "clam"?

Where are all the "meat & potato" people out there?

Once thing for sure, they're not eating clam, and there are a lot more of us than you who need a "clam" for a quick snack.

My guess is that they're at some "buy one...get one free" Italian, Chinese, or good old American "family" restaurant, ENJOYING themselves, knowing that they won't have a coronary or indigestion over the bill when it arrives.

Will the "powers that be" ever lower themselves to the "meat and potatoes" bunch...the group they all came from, but now believe they are "above" us peasantry?

Not in a million years !

...even though about 10,980 people out of the 11,000 or so who populate our community, laugh at them in their quest to make "a silk purse out of a sow's ear".

...the other 20 love clams !

(Gee---another menu idea...sow's ear casserole...with resident discount ???)

You can't get mad at them; instead I think they should be praised for proving the stereotype that a senior citizen is the easiest mark in the world to "hose"...

...after all...they sold you and I a bill of goods in their "scientific" survey that was as accurate as a Cub's fan, predicting they would win the World Series this year.

...and even funnier...we elected a number of them to continue in their "informed" roles !

And in honor of them continuing in that capacity...as I'm sure some of them will run for reelection in a few months...

I think they need a "unified" campaign song which best describes their restaurant decision making success...

Well Vic...or Larry or Tom or Dick or Darryl and Darryl, or whoever is the guy who keeps making the decisions on prices or "clams"....

All of you misread this market....

...and you if you believe you have even the slightest prayer of succeeding, you best change your entire act, or join the brigade of the recently departed !

...that is, unless the "powers" will figure out yet another "creative" financing arrangement.

So...until any of us get that "burger and fries" at a cost of FIVE BUCKS with DRINK INCLUDED and a small order of FRIES...

...this whole thing really does have the odor of a dead fish !

Bad News for Bad Drivers

What Are Those Blue Lights on Traffic Signal Poles ?

Look closely...because you're being watched...and honestly...in my opinion...

It's about time !

I know many of you out there enjoy "putting your pedal to the metal", but there are a lot more of us....the ones who want to stay alive and keep out of harm's way...

...who are THRILLED  by this new contraption attached to light poles under traffic signals.

According to Channel 8 News ....

"That blue mystery light is an indicator that helps police catch drivers who run red lights. A police officer typically waits in a safe location near the intersection, where he or she can observe the blue light."

"When the red traffic signal arrives, the blue light turns on. The officer can then determine if a driver entered the intersection on the red. A big benefit is police can tell whether cars are running red lights from either side of the intersection."
"Most intersections include white lines or stop bars. When a vehicle crosses that line on a green or yellow light, it claims the right-of-way in the intersection. Drivers are following the law as long as they safely enter the intersection on a green or yellow and, therefore, can safely exit the intersection (even on a red light) without breaking the law."

"If the light is yellow before the vehicle reaches the stop bar, stop line, or crosswalk, the driver must reduce speed and prepare to stop. Running a red light can result in a ticket of $300 or more."

Las Vegas drivers are apparently the 5th worst drivers in the nation, and auto insurance premiums are approximately 40% higher than in safer states.

So...for the rest of us out there who want to live a long retirement...in one piece...

SLOW DOWN...because it's gonna "cost ya" if you don't !

Get Ready for Pain at the Pump....According to Channel 8

County Commissioners Vote to Increase Gas Tax

Clark County Commissioners voted Tuesday to increase the fuel tax rate to pay for infrastructure improvements around the county.

Under the plan, fuel taxes will go up 3 cents per-gallon, per-year, which will fund up to $700 million in projects, including the Boulder City Bypass and the plan to make the 215 beltway into a complete freeway.

During the first year, which starts in January, the Regional Transportation Commission says motorists can expect to pay an average of $16 more at the pump.

In the second year, which is expected to start next summer, drivers can expect to pay $30 more.

By the third year, drivers can expect to pay approximately $50 more.

Commissioner Steve Sisolak was the lone vote against the increase.

"I have advocated and argued all along that I think all taxes need to be fair, stable, and broad-cased, and I don't think this tax is any of the three," he said.

Sisolak believes taxpayers are getting a bad deal, but his colleague Larry Brown looks at it differently.

"You take the average driver, right now, congestion is costing them between $800 and $900 a year," Brown, who also chairs the Regional Transportation Committee, said.

Several citizens expressed their opposition to the increase at the commission meeting. Most who opposed the idea did not want to pay more for gas, and they were worried about government waste.

"As we are now, we're pinching pennies to make it. So a dime a day is a little bit too much to me," driver Michelle Brown said.

Union members wore orange to the commission meeting to show their solidarity for the tax.

"It was the right thing to do. There is no question the only way out of this recession is to put people back to work," executive secretary-treasurer with the Nevada AFL-CIO Danny Thompson said.

Supporters of the proposal feel it will increase construction jobs. The RTC says the tax will create between 8,900 and 9,400 jobs.

The southern Nevada business community also backed the tax because it will improve traffic flows.

"Infrastructure is investment. Investment is what creates jobs and what maintains commerce in our community," Tim Cashman with the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce said.

The tax may not last forever.

Voters will be able to say yes or no to the gas tax in 2016.
