Within the past few days,
Anthem Opinions has contacted a number of individuals who have declared
themselves to be candidates for the Sun City Anthem Board of Directors 2016
election.
In the spirit of our
dedication to provide you accurate information and allow you, the voting members
of our community, to determine the individual(s) best qualified to represent
you, we have offered them an opportunity to make a number of statements over the
coming weeks regarding various issues of importance to the well-being of our
association.
We made this
offer...contingent on one requirement on our
part....that they answer EACH and EVERY question you
might pose to them.
Those questions and their
responses will be posted beneath the various statements the candidates will make
over the coming weeks.
This will not entail just
one statement. In fact, we plan to have a number of statements from the
candidates over the campaign period and WILL NOT EDIT their
contents in ANY WAY.
We know that few of you
attend formal debates because in many cases, audience participation is
limited...and no more than a hundred people normally attend.
(Perhaps that topic
itself might be considered as to how additional participation might be
encouraged.)
Our objective is to avoid the matter of "asking a neighbor
or friend who should I vote for", biased blog
endorsements...or even worse, not casting a ballot at
all.
So we ask all of you who
care about the well-being of Sun CIty Anthem to participate in this process
in making an intelligent decision as to who you best believe has the strongest
credentials to guide us through the most transitional period of the seventeen
year existence of Sun City
Anthem.....self-management.
Look for our first
candidate statement within the next day or two.

Board Director's Statement Regarding Self-Management
Sun City Anthem Board Director, Jim Mayfield. has asked Anthem Opinions to publish this
notification concerning the impending Sun City Anthem move to self-management
that will commence on April 1, 2016.
As you will see, in Jim's opinion, he has made it
clear that this new path WILL and SHOULD include participation
from members as we embark on this experiment that will affect our
community....
...a message never before made by a Board
member...and welcomed by those of us who believe "the
People" are entitled to an unbiased and caring attitude by members of our
Board of Directors.

Governance...What's Next ?

I have received feedback from various people that
the Governance Presentation this week did not provide specifics on the concepts
presented. This feedback is accurate.
The Governance Presentation this week was designed
to lay out a well defined strategic framework and specific definitions that
Board members, SCA GM, committee members, and the community at-large will be
expected to use in the work that lies ahead.
The President is creating a schedule for community
workshops to begin a highly public dialogue on how the concepts will be
implemented and their effect on the organization of the Board, the committees,
other advisory groups, and the roles of SCA Members in governance.
I expect these workshops will drive out and
resolve differences in expectations and positions regarding the roles of
volunteers, including Board members, within our community, and details about the
roles of management in managing our association.
Once the schedule is announced, I hope Members of
SCA will actively participate in the discussion
process.
The process will be about change. My experience
is that when people talk about change, it is usually within a context of
expecting others to change.
Power sharing, both formal and informal, will have
to change if self-management is to be successful.
Questions involving the role of advisory groups,
including the standing committees, will have to be asked and answered in the
process.
Regardless of the structures selected, the
emphasis of volunteer groups will have to change in order to support
the responsibilities listed in the Governance Presentation, including staying
out of the management responsibilities listed in the Governance
Presentation.
I am looking forward to a robust evaluation and
assessment process with hopes
of high community participation.
I also encourage that the discussion of governance
be central to the questions posed to Board candidates this year.
Just remember, SCA will have to give up its theme
song--
--in order to move forward.

Dear readers, this "Bella...gate" or what others have referred to as "bus...gate" scandal gets better as each day passes.
It was recently learned that our
Association President has become so concerned about her "reputation" as a leader, that she tried desperately to have
the Democratic National Committee send Sun City Anthem a check to reimburse our
association....
...for a "boo boo" she has yet to acknowledge, must less apologize
for !
Turns out the DNC sent her a response
that told her "Nope...the matter
was closed".
In plain understandable English, that also
means they told her...
"TOO BAD, SO
SAD...WE AIN"T PAYIN' SQUAT"
It was also previously disclosed by one
of our readers, that at the time of the event, the President
of the Sun City Anthem Democrat Club offered to foot the $2,600 for the
buses, but in our president's typical "cost effective" manner in which
things are handled by her....
SHE
DECLINED...and told him THE ASSOCIATION WOULD
PAY !
Now it's been learned that she's
"begged" the Democrat Club President to "take it to a higher level" and make a
PLEA to have the Clinton campaign and /or DNC to pay the tab.
I wonder how the Democrat Club members
feel about that ?
And we have even
more...
Turns out we also found out that our
Vice President, who follows her every wish like a lap
dog looking for it's next treat...
...in
his dire need to be the association's next
president...
...has been
lobbying everyone in sight to "take the fall" in
order to avoid any further "Bus Gate"
criticism.
Well now, for those out there who still
believe those funds were spent by Sun City Anthem as the result of an
"emergency" that concerned "health and safety
issues"....
...looks like they were right all
along...
....but for different reasons
!
If it wasn't before, it certainly HAS become an "emergency" for the Association President
and her Vice President "for health and safety reasons"
NOW...
Theirs ! !
!
I promise all of you...this is not the
end. We WILL GET THE FULL and HONEST SCOOP...and get to the bottom of this one
way or another.

Looks like our alternative blogger has
been calling every person in sight to run for the board to "continue the wonderful job" associated with this current
bunch.
So far...only one taker...a guy named Bob Burch, who has made it plain he thinks the Sun City Anthem board should be commended for their governing efforts.
We learned that the alternative blogger
and his wife, Roz
...
(you know...the
Liberty Center's "we don't need it independently inspected" Roz)
...had dinner with Mr. Burch and his wife...and told him that he would make a
fine candidate.
Uh huh !
Well...we hope the Sun City Anthem
community will take note of all these fine individuals who...for the first time
in years.
...have been exposed for what they
are....

I have been following the Bella-gate scenario and matter of fact, had sent out an email to my personal friends about it and it snowballed into 140 homes via friends who passed it on.
Many of us have written to Bella asking her to pay the $2600 back and many have also asked her to resign from the SCA Board.
Several weeks ago I finally copied all the emails that were sent back and forth from me, my friends and from Bella, herself and forwarded that email to every board member, including Bella asking for her to personally repay the $2600 and for the board to remove her not only as President, but from the SCA Board as well.
I am going to attend the next board meeting on the 28th and I am asking if you are going to encourage your readers to do the same.
Thanks for posting such an informative, fair and interesting blog.
It's a breath of fresh air here in Anthem. -

If you only knew how much your email has meant...to me...the community...and...to the Board of Directors !
A number of Board Members are of the belief that there are merely a handful of people who look at their actions with disdain.
They really do believe the community loves the job they are doing...
...that all that matters in the minds of residents are low dues payments.
They believe that their "mouthpiece", the alternative blogger, will once again, successfully influence the community with his falsehoods, and they cling to him and to the old cronies who have brought us to this state of affairs....and...
...want to maintain it, whatever the cost.
I feel that THERE IS POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE AIR for Sun City Anthem....
...that... "Bella...gate" was merely the final straw...
...that...when added to the thousands of wasted dollars that were spent on a restaurant, legal fees, and an amount that will stagger everyone when the totals on the Liberty Center are disclosed...
...that a magazine owned by the husband of the Board President has always been a conflict of interest with Sun City Anthem publications...
...that...residents have finally awoken to the facts they have refused to see for years...
...that...people like Mrs. Meese and a number of her fellow board members...have not acted in their best interests...
and that the only solution to this mess is...
...that...they must be removed...the most effective time being the coming board election.
I know for a fact that Sun City Anthem is more than disgusted with their continually "going their own way" without listening to residents.
I see it by the daily increases in our subscribers, and the number of people who read Anthem Opinions daily.
Susan, we have an election to win...and with the right people elected, we can allow Sun City Anthem to heal...to allow a transition to be successful without the political muck that closed mindedness has been allowed to exist for years.
With your help and those of others who can look at matters as they are, rather than what corrupt others have tried to convince you they have been, we can change Sun City Anthem. -

When is it OK to just invite the public to enjoy our facilities?
This was certainly the case with the Clinton visit. Who authorized that?
The Republican club did not do this for the Huckabee visit.

Anthem Opinions has an overwhelming number of requests to subscribe to our
publication.
And for those
requests....we thank every and every one of you who recently joined our
information highway...
"looking at Sun City Anthem through the eyes of its independent
community".
HOWEVER
In a number of cases, a
number of new requests have not completed the 2nd requirement in order to complete the subscription
process.
This 2nd requirement is
for YOUR PROTECTION.
Once an email address is
sent to Anthem Opinions, it is registered and a follow-up email is then sent to
you.
Why a second
email?
WE DON'T WANT ANYONE
USING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN ORDER TO SUBSCRIBE or USE IT to MAKE DEROGATORY

It seems that
you’ve taken a page from the Bernie Madoff School of
Executive Action Utilization and unilaterally
stole $2600 from OUR
coffers to fund those shuttle buses.
I have read
through the HOA regulations found in the Public Offering Statement given to us
when we bought our house in SCA ( Did YOU ever read that document?) – nowhere is
there any authorization for any one Board member to pull a stunt like the one
you just pulled.
But, in one
regard, I should thank you.
In previous
correspondence to this Blog, I questioned your failure to comply with the
Fiduciary Responsibility in the HOA President’s position.
Chalk this one up
as one more (albeit a big one) example of your failure to comply with such
ethics.
And, by the way,
when did the HOA Board become advocates of one particular Party?
It has come to my
attention that the Board actually sent a bill to the Republican Party to cover
the cost of extra chairs, etc. during the recent Republican Party Candidates’
rallies at the Anthem Center.
I’m sure that SCA
residents who do not necessarily support Hillary Clinton, will find that
appalling.
Incidentally, I would like to
thank Mrs. Seddon for demonstrating the female
equivalent of testicular fortitude at that meeting.
She appears to
represent a refreshing interlude from the managerial acquiescence we have
suffered over the past several years.
I find it
(almost) funny that Mrs. Seddon is the result of the
Board’s desire for ‘Self-Management’.
Remember:
“Be careful of what you wish for,
because it may
come true”.
But I digress –
Ms. Meese would
you please inform the 1,000s of residents in SCA WHEN you plan to reimburse
us?

Thank you Robert N for your article in expressing how many of us residents feel about the expenditure of $2,600 for buses that were not even utilized because no one was told about their availability until 6:30 PM the night before the rally.
This is a blatant misuse of association funds.
I would be interested to know just how many people used the buses.

The money should be refunded, immediately!
Power and position does crazy things to some people. They begin to think they know what is best for their constituency, they FORGET that they were elected to represent us, they circumvent the rules and do not follow procedure.
This is the beginning of tyranny.....
We need to demand that she refund the money or who knows which liberties will be taken from us in the future...this must stop now!!

First as the comment about the board favoring a particular candidate, as I recall 2 Republican candidates have already spoken at SCA.
The problem here us apparently lack of adequate planning.
The Clinton campaign would have paid for bussing if notified but this apparently did not occur for what ever reason and for this I blame the Board for agreeing to the event without proper arrangements in place.
However faced with a potentially hazardous situation someone needed to act to prevent potential bodily harm at the liability to the HOA. When such situations arise it is the job of the President to act to protect the HOA.
As it was, cars were parked on Hampton Rd and at Walgreens.
If no alternatives had ben made for transportation from Liberty and anyone had suffered so much as a hangnail, the outrage would have been deafening.
The reform needed is to develop a plan of action for all outside speakers who potentially will draw large crowds. -
Neal, in my opinion your comment was a good one, but in my mind didn't go far enough.
I...and...the overwhelming number of residents... just can't buy the justification for spending the money, and the reason why it was spent.
The issue at hand is the unauthorized usage of Association funds.
If this was such an "emergency" and created a "health and safety" issue, that should have been addressed by this board at the time the event was scheduled, and the residents should have been notified that a "health and safety issue" existed.
...and if they really believed that it did constitute a "health and safety" issue to those they represent, NO SUCH EVENT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SCHEDULED AT ALL.
This event had plenty of advance notice to plan properly.
Presidential candidates just don't decide to "pop in" and say hi.
Residents were not notified in advance because our supposed leaders believed there was NO "health and safety" issue.
This latest excuse for an association president taking it upon herself to spend our funds, was merely a figment of someone's imagination to justity it....and...the community ISN'T BUYING IT, NO MATTER HOW HARD they try to sell it.
HOWEVER...as a result of POOR PLANNING, I fully agree there was a LIABILITY issue...and that LIABILITY ISSUE was further compounded by the UNAUTHORIZED SCHEDULING AND PAYING FOR the buses.
That LIABILITY issue was ALLOWING STRANGERS access, and encouraging them to use SCA facilities and subjecting our association to legal action had ANY ONE OF THEM been injured by either entering, occupying, or exiting our facilities, whether that be walking to Anthem Center or riding on a bus SPONSORED AND PAID FOR by SCA.
Let me use another example...an example that IN TODAY'S WORLD, MUST BE CONSIDERED.....TERRORISM.
...and the reality of OUR ABILITY to protect ourselves against it.
When the Secret Service can't protect a president from some disturbed individual jumping over a White House fence, just how secure is a candidate...or worse...those who surround that individual from some fool who decides to make a name or him or herself by taking a shot or EXPLODING some form of device "to make their ludicrous point" ?
Other than the tragedy of that taking place, just what do you think the liability of SCA would have been, had that occurred and a number of people lost their lives?
This entire idea of sponsoring a such a meeting, Democrat or Republican, was A BAD IDEA...from a liability standpoint alone.....a decision that should have been considered PRIOR to allowing it.
...and those buses...UNAUTHORIZED SPENDING on them, did little other make a LIABILITY nightmare even worse.
The problem does not revolve around "health and safety".
Instead, it's all about the people chosen who have the where with all to have the common sense and ability to think things out before they act...and the association president GOOFED big time...
...and, through a demonstrated lack of common sense and inexperience, doesn't have the leadership ability to admit it.
Any INTELLIGENT individual who would have been confronted with such an issue, would have simply said, "I made a mistake, and I'm sorry"...and written a check as a sign of her remorse. The problem would have been fully solved, and the issue would have DIED ON THE SPOT..
After all, her husband's monthly magazine filled with advertising revenue in all probability, could have easily covered the $2,600...
...and...most importantly, saved HER and HER FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS, the embarrassment of her demonstrating incompetence.
Instead she clearly demonstrated her "Let Them Eat Cake" attitude of superiority....contriving some ridiculous excuse to justify INCOMPETENCE and ARROGANCE.
AND...even more importantly, CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED everything Anthem Opinions has WRITTEN about her for YEARS....SHE WASTES MONEY and SPENDS IT LIKE A DRUNKEN SAILOR.
For those reasons, SHE SHOULD RESIGN. -

I read your articles on the subject matter with interest. While I normally agree with your perspective on SCA matters, this time I think you are somewhat over-the-top. There seemed to be some he said she said comments concerning whether a third-party would pay for the costs. To me that does not seem like the important thing. To have a well functioning organization there are times that money needs to be spent to keep our residents comfortable and without undue stress. While I did not plan to attend the event the lifestyle here requires more than people being left on their own to combat unusual situations. If the president thinks that something requires expenditure of funds to keep us comfortable, then the president should have the authorization to expand reasonable funds without having a full board meeting.
To call for the resignation of a president of the board based on less than 100 responses and complaints does not seem to me to be using good judgment. The people who protested are the ones who want to make sure their objections are heard. I understand that. But I suspect there is a vast majority who are not upset and do not take the time to reply to your opinion. Since we can't even get a majority of the homeowners to cast a ballot for officers, it seems unlikely that we could get a majority of the homeowners to express an opinion about the cost of the bus to accommodate residence to a very well received meeting. Turnout indicates to me that residents are interested in having a high profile visitor come to our Association. If we want to be petty about criticizing those who take appropriate action to ensure resident comfort, then it is likely at some point we will not get valuable input from people who can turn out a large percentage of the population to see and/or hear them.
To extrapolate the opinions of a few into a recommendation of the entire community is not prudent journalism. I would hope you would reconsider the conclusion that the president should resign because of what is in my opinion, a less than egregious violation of presidential responsibility. I disagree that this is a matter of 100 people.
You may not be aware of it, but our readership now averages 1,400 to 1,500 separate computers daily, far exceeding the readership of other publications.
Just yesterday, 1,726 separate computers visited Anthem Opinions and read the above article...
...and if each one of them discussed it with just one other individual, that would essentially constitute half of the entire association.
No matter where you go; club functions, Anthem Center, even the golf course, at casual luncheons and dinners over numerous area restaurants, and even a number of people I met at the South Point's Dennis Bono Show just yesterday....
... there are few people in Sun City Anthem who are not aware of the problem...
...and with only a few exceptions, most are in full agreement that this did not have anything to do with an "emergency" or some need for "health and safety" issue.
Even the alternative blogger's "groupies" seem to believe the actions of Mrs. Meese were imprudent...and he has tried to avoid the subject like the plague as a result, making attempt after attempt to do so by changing the topic hoping they will somehow believe this is a non-issue.
As I previously stated, if this was a "health & safety" issue, that should have been conveyed to residents, and should not have been allowed.
There was also the issue of liability that in my opinion was not properly discussed. I suggest you read my previous comment above.
No, I will NOT reconsider my belief that Mrs. Meese should resign as the President of our association.
If anything, as each day passes and more and more is disclosed, if she has any love for this community, she would be blind not to realize that successful governance is all but impossible as a result of the lack of confidence people have expressed in her ability to lead.
She is the talking point of Sun City Anthem...and...even many of those who have staunchly supported her in the past, have now come to the conclusion her actions were at best, questionable, resulting in not being worthy of trust.
She could have, and should have, handled this a lot better than she did; and this latest episode, when combined with the vast amount of financial WASTE she and other members of the board have exhibited in the past couple of years; a monthly magazine which commenced after she became a board member, owned by her husband, many looking at as a conflict of interest, and the latest episode of the Liberty Center, making an announcement following a meeting in which NO RECORD OF MINUTES were made...
...leaves many in the community who do pay attention to association affairs, this was..."the straw that broke the camel's back."
She could have avoided all of this by a simple "I's sorry. I erred" and a repayment of the funds.
Instead, she and certain other members of the board, have been seeking support for her to anyone who will listen....and...finding few takers.
I am adamant that the proper decision for the good of Sun City Anthem is to remove herself from the presidency.
And...I also believe her not doing so, further harms any person or persons she may support in the 2016 board election.

Her only place is jail, that's where she belongs.

Thank you for speaking to this subject, and one that surely will require some clarification on duties during and after the upcoming transition.
I have always been an advocate for communication such as this from Boards.
The article will certainly raise questions and concerns; as it should.
Being a relatively new resident at Sun City Anthem I am particularly glad to see the call for more community participation.
