Sun City Anthem Resident Ignored City Warning...Was Fined and Found Guilty
From a resident who just attended
this action.
Sun City Anthem Travel Consultant
Guilty of Criminal
Misdemeanor
Fined $640 for No Business
License
Sara Raney, self-proclaimed
travel agent promoting an Alaskan Cruise to SCA members, was found guilty of
Criminal Misdemeanor in Henderson Municipal Court on April 15.
The crime was for refusing to obtain the proper business licenses
even after being warned to do so by City officials.
Raney was cited
for the criminal offense at the Liberty Center by a Henderson
Officer.
Henderson Municipal Court Judge Mark Stevens found Ms.
Raney guilty of the criminal charge when she pleaded No Contest at her
arraignment.
The judge informed Raney he would find her guilty based
on that plea and she said she understood.
The judge issued the guilty verdict and imposed a fine of $640
that was recommended by the Henderson City
Attorney.
The criminal conviction will be on the permanent
record of Raney for the rest of her life.
A tragedy and embarrassment for all SCA members is the criminal activity by Raney was implicitly or explicitly supported by FSR Activities Director Maurice Talley and by the SCA board of directors.
Mr. Talley appeared in court with Raney,
apparently for moral support because he did not participate in the court
proceedings.
This seems to further emphasize his participation
and cooperation in the criminal activity.
Question
Will SCA be billed for Mr. Talley's
time when he was at the Court?
That would not seem to be part of his normal job
duties

PROCLAMATION: THE CITY OF
HENDERSON
WHEREAS, the
people of the United States received word August 11, 1945 of the end of World
War II and greeted the news of the Allies noble victory with joyous celebration,
humility and spiritual reflection; and,
WHEREAS, the
victory marked the culmination of an unprecedented national effort that defeated
the forces of aggression, brought freedom to subjugated nations and ended the
horrors of the Holocaust; and,
WHEREAS, these historic accomplishments were achieved through the
collective service and personal sacrifice of the people of the United States,
both those who served in uniform and those who supported them on the homefront,
and the nearly 300,000 Americans who gave their lives in service to their
country during World War II; and,
WHEREAS, August 11, 1945 marked not only the end of the war but
also the beginning of a great era of rebuilding led by the United States to
restore the societies of both their allies and former foes alike, and the
formation of an array of organizations and institutions that helped to
strengthen American democracy by promoting civic engagement, volunteerism and
service to community and country; and,
WHEREAS,
the courage, dedication, self-sacrifice
and compassion of the “ordinary heroes” of the WWII generation continue to
inspire our nation, especially the men and women who are currently serving and
protecting our country around the world; and,
WHEREAS, the
entire WWII generation, military and civilian alike, has provided a model of
national unity and community that will continue to serve as a source of
inspiration for current and future generations of Americans to come together to
work for the continued prosperity of the United States and the world; and,
WHEREAS, the
Spirit of ’45 is a nationwide nonprofit initiative to remember, honor and
celebrate the achievements of America’s Greatest Generation with a goal to
support a national Spirit of ’45 annual commemorative event on the second Sunday
in August; and,
WHEREAS, The
Vegas Voice will host the first Nevada Spirit of ’45 event April 16, 2014 at the
Henderson Pavilion with Honorary Grand Marshall Marty Allen, Host Mark O’Toole
and entertainment that includes Lou Gazzara, Dangerous Curves, Corrie Sachs,
Denise Clemente, Gary Anthony, Genevieve and others; and,
WHEREAS, the
City of Henderson has the mission to provide services and resources that enhance
the quality of life for those who live, learn, work and play in our city;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Andy Hafen, as
Mayor of the City of Henderson, Nevada, do hereby proclaim
April 16, 2014
to be
SPIRIT OF
‘45 DAY
in recognition of
the courage, dedication, self-sacrifice and compassion displayed by the ordinary
heroes of World War II and encourage our residents to support the Spirit of ’45
events leading up to August 10, 2014.
IN
WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and
caused the Great Seal of the City of Henderson, Nevada, to be affixed this
16th day of April 2014.

Remembering a Hero
Heroes: some are fictitious and seen on
television and then there are those who are ordinary people, saving the lives of
total strangers from burning buildings or automobiles. Some are servicemen and women, some
are publicly acknowledged and then there are those only known by close friends
and families.
I would
like to share with you the story of one such heroine, known to her close friends
and family and only one of many heroes/heroines who sacrificed more than one
should ever have to endure for freedom and one’s fellow man.
In
keeping with “the Spirit of ’45”, I would like to
share the story of a young Filipina, born in Baguio, Philippines in
1921.
Orphaned and according to her account,
adopted by an American Army officer, LTC Dawcer (who hailed from Tennessee) this
young Filipina played an important role in saving hundreds of lives of both
Americans and Filipinos interred in Japanese prisons in the Philippines during
WWII.
In
her capacity as a Filipino
guerilla, she covertly smuggled food and medicines into the prisons which
helped save the lives of many prisoners suffering from malnutrition, starvation,
beriberi, dysentery, etc.
She was
able to verify identifications and conditions on many prisoners which was passed
along to military and intelligence officials, as well as family
members.
Her
networking efforts enabled her to collect needed supplies and money from
donators which were used to buy needed medicines for those interred without
adequate medical care.
She
exchanged money for prisoners and helped smuggle out letters from the prisoners
to their loved ones.
Her
desire for freedom, her gratefulness to an American Army Officer who adopted her
and her sense of right and wrong all contributed to her decision to fight
Communism in her country and greatly aid the American war effort by becoming a
guerrilla.
It
was through her perseverance, sacrifice and truly heroic deeds that she was formally recognized by the U.S. Government and presented
the Medal of Freedom in 1948 at the age of 26.
This is the actual medal awarded.
This
young woman, captured on more than one occasion and tortured at the hands of
Japanese soldiers, was fighting for a cause she believed in, namely
Freedom. Freedom, a
simple word, whose meaning is literally unknown to millions of those who take it
for granted daily, yet so highly cherished by those who truly understand its
meaning or greatly sacrificed to attain
it.
And so it
is appropriate that this young woman was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the
country she swore allegiance to, and subsequently became a naturalized citizen
of, after the war.
This young woman was named
...
Naomi Flores
She
married an American Army officer, John Francis Jackson (whom she met in the
Philippines as he was assigned to investigate war crimes after
WWII). They married and
had four children.
Naomi
is just one of the many who exemplify the Spirit of ’45 and I hope the attached
affidavit describing her actions during the war as well as the attached photos
of her MOF can be useful in keeping the Spirit of ’45 alive.
(Note on
the backside of the medal on the right and left sides of the liberty bell, is
her name inscribed, although it not real visible in the photo).
Naomi passed in Feb 2013 but will always be remembered by
her family and friends and those who lives she
touched.
*The submitter is Naomi’s youngest child
and a resident of SCA (and the one referred to in the affidavit as joining the
Army.
That
handwritten comment was added by Johnny Mack, son of LTC Edward Mack, who was a
prisoner that Naomi worked closely with while gathering information and
distributing medicines.
Unfortunately, LTC Mack did not survive. While researching
his father’s life, Johnny found personal letters that his Mother had
kept. The affidavit was
one such letter and he provided it to the United States Military Academy so it
could be added to their archives; hence his added
comments.

* It is
also the submitter’s personal opinion that the Medal of Freedom presented to
individuals during the mid-1940s and early 1950s as a result of one’s
contribution to WWII is far
different from the medal (by the same
name) presented today.
Back
then it was presented to individuals whose courageous, selfless sacrifices
contributed to the war effort and it symbolized heroic actions taken without
regard of one’s personal dangers.
Most
recently the medal has been presented for humanitarian or liberal arts
achievement or political favors and denigrates the previous recipients who truly
earned this distinction.

It is....What It Is !....So Accept It !
What Part of
the word "NO" Isn't Understood?
It was a weekend and the weekend was supposed to mean fun.
Not this past one ... especially if you
were told "NO" by a committee after months of their
deliberations !
How many articles can a guy write about
a "mini-golf" course after the fact before he realizes...
It's
done !
It's
finished !
and my
favorite....
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF MALCONTENTS !
Honestly, it's as if the mini-golf
proponent can't get it through his head that DADDY
SAID "NO" and it's time to stop WHINING about the decision.
Months ago we at Anthem Opinions
pleaded to those who made the decision, including the mini-golf proponent, that
a major expenditure should be placed before a full community for a
vote.
After all, with a minor exception
(shuffleboard was estimated to be about $12,000), all of the proposals were BIG
BUCKS !
...BUT....
That vote should include FULL COSTS and pros and cons sent to a populace in order
for them to make an INFORMED decision.
NOPE...wasn't going to happen....only a select group were
to make this major decision, who in turn would send a recommendation to the
Board of Directors for approval.
...AND...
The guy who somehow is obsessed with
mini-golf, STRESSED that same group would be competent, would send their PROPER
recommendation, and would act in the best interests of the
community.
...AND...
They
did !
Unfortunately for the mini-golf
brigade, it wasn't the one they wanted to hear !
Now...it seems to be a different
ballgame....from them.
FOUL.....LIES...COMPLAINTS...DISAPPOINTMENT...
...Oh,
the unfairness of it all...
...are the cries from the few who
believed that people would play in a mini-golf tournament ON
A NINE HOLE COURSE in the dead of summer
heat....
ARE
RIDICULOUS !
Had Mr. Mini-Golf and his "supposed
700" petitioners been so confident that their choice was THE CHOICE, then they
shouldn't have remained silent as to putting this to a community
vote.
...BUT...
They opposed
that "community vote" and so, in accordance
with RULES they have lauded their leaders for making in the past, now they seem
to have changed their minds....
...because...
As of now...
As of now...
THEY
LOST !
So...to those "I need someone to
control my life" supporters....
PRACTICE
WHAT YOU PREACH
and...
ACCEPT the fact that...
... the "fat lady has crooned her final tune" as
to mini-golf !

Property and Grounds Committee...Mini-Golf...a Bogey !

Anyone ?
Looks like another tennis
court was the choice of the Sun City Anthem Properties and Grounds Committee as
to who won the point lottery !
No one knows if that
committee will actually recommend it to the Board, but at least one ridiculous
idea was defeated....miniature
golf.
...but not by much
!
The point system used gave
the nod to the additional tennis court by a mere 5
points over miniature golf with the shuffleboard concept in third place,
only 20 points behind tennis.
Apparently the sponsor of
the miniature golf proposal blamed a large group of tennis club members in attendance at
the last Properties and Grounds meeting for the defeat, but in our Anthem
"opinion"....
Who's
kidding who ?
For someone
who had over 700 signatures on a petition proposing an idea of seniors
playing mini golf in tournaments in 110 degree summer heat, while his "army" of
volunteers "conveniently" were telling those who signed his petition that such an
idea was "free", apparently fell flat on his face as less than a handful of
the "supposed 700" showed up to speak on behalf of his
project.
Why would
that be?
Perhaps most of them were
embarrassed as to having possibly been "duped" into signing something without
full information as to its TOTAL cost !
It should come as no
surprise to our readers that our dedication to "fiscal responsibility",
questioned it's feasibility after research by a number of people showed its
potential usage as MINIMAL.
One additional comment made
was that other than Sun City Summerlin, only ONE other homeowners association
could be found between the Phoenix and Las Vegas area to have such a mini-golf
facility, despite a number of such associations having a larger population than
Sun City Anthem.
We still have doubts that a
single tennis court with a tab of $122,000 makes much
sense, but we have to say one thing as the board makes its final decision as to
what it will actually do...
THERE'S NO
SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH !
AND
THAT LUNCH
WON'T BE SERVED ON A MINI-GOLF COURSE !
And...to the blog proponent
who has made countless numbers of statements about "never looking back" at
past decisions; perhaps, for once, he might practice what he's preached...and
accept the fact that COMMON SENSE
PREVAILED.
Our congrats to the Property
and Grounds Committee for making the decision to close the door on that
senseless alternative.

Saying Goodbye to Mickey
Joe Yule's
Life Was a Show
"Let's
Put On A Show !"
How many times did we hear
those words in the early movie career of Mickey
Rooney?
Or how many times did his movie dad,
Lewis Stone, better known as Judge Hardy, sit with young Andy and give him some
fatherly advice...
...advice most of us
also realized as we grew up....
...that "father really did
know best "...
...no matter how old you
were !
We lost Mickey Rooney at the age of 93
on Sunday, April 6th, and his loss in my mind, is yet another reminder of the
"days of yore" that so many of us knew as children...days that lately seem to be
traveling at a speed faster than ever imaginable.
Let's look back at Joseph Yule, Jr.,
born on September 23, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York.
Joe Jr. was the product of parents that
were a part of vaudeville, and one day...92 years ago, young Joe somehow entered
his dad's act while crawling on stage...in a specially made
"tuxedo".
And from that moment, Joe Yule Jr. got
the "bug" that would keep him in show business for nearly the remainder of his
93 years.
Joe's folks separated in 1924 due to a
slump in vaudeville, and his mother, Neil, caught notice of an article in an
entertainment magazine that a man named Hal Roach in Hollywood was looking for
young kids to star in a movie series called "Our
Gang".
However, the ad wanted a dark haired
child....and well, Joe Jr. didn't have dark hair.
Neil couldn't afford hair dye, so she
used burnt cork on his scalp to darken his locks....the result, Joe Jr. got the
part of " Mickey McGuire" that lasted for 78 films from 1927 to 1936.
Joe wanted to keep the name "Mickey
McGuire" due to the fame he had achieved in addition to wanting to use it for
his future career and...he legally changed it to "Mickey McGuire" in
1937.
Unfortunately for the "new Mickey", a
lawsuit ensued and the Our Gang people were able to retain the original rights
to that name, barring young Joe from using it
professionally.
Mom stepped in again....and decided
that at least the Mickey part would be used, and urged her son to change his
last name from "McGuire"
to "Looney".
Joe wouldn't have anything to do with a
name like "Looney", so he compromised with his mother and Joe Yule Jr. went from
Mickey McGuire to a name that would last for the remainder of his
life....

And in 1937....at the age of 17, life dramatically changed for
Mickey when he landed a role in a "B" movie called
"A Family Affair" in which he was to play a character
named
"Andy
Hardy".
...a "B" movie that became
so popular, that 16 of them were subsequently made from 1937-1958
!
And for being a "tall " 5'3", he
managed to have quite a few girlfriends along the way....Lana Turner, Kathryn Grayson,
Donna Reed, Esther
Williams, Ann Rutherford (as Polly Benedict),
and a character named "Betsy Booth" played by Judy
Garland !

Mickey didn't stop as "Andy"; and in
the early years starred in such great films as "Boys
Town" with Spencer Tracy in 1938, and "Young Tom
Edison" in 1940.
Think Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, or
Tyrone Power were the big "hunks" of the day, then think
again.
In 1938, 1939, and again in 1940,
Mickey Rooney was the top Box Office Movie Star in
Hollywood.
War was declared in late 1941, and
Mickey patriotically entertained the troops until in 1944, he too enlisted in
the Army, serving 21 months until is discharge. He received
the Bronze Star medal for his service in entertaining troops in combat
zones.
Life became a bit strained for Mickey
following the war, and his career stalled.
He continued to make a number of
memorable films that included "Words and Music"
(1948) in which he played the role of Lorenz Hart, lyrist partner of Richard
Rodgers; "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961); "Requiem for a Heavyweight" (1962); "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963); and perhaps the most
successful, "The Black Stallion"
(1979).
A new entertainment medium called
television came into being, and Mickey Rooney soon became a staple year after
year primarily as a character actor.
His memorable performance as the title
character "Bill", a mentally handicapped man
attempting to live on his own after leaving a mental institution, opposite
Dennis Quaid in 1981, earned him both Emmy and Golden Globe
awards.
The Big and Small screen was still not
enough for Mickey and Broadway stage success with Ann Miller in "Sugar Babies" in the 1980s and 90s was the highlight of his
stage career...
...in addition to such other great
performances in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum" and "The Will Rogers
Follies".
As if aging would never stop the
excitement he brought to his audiences, in 2014 he
made his final movie appearance as the character, "Gus", in "NIght in the Museum 3"
which is still in production.
One can't end a Mickey Rooney story
without mentioning the women of his real life.....8
wives....the first of which was the glamorous Ava Gardner, who he married
in 1942...
... and
last, Jan Chamberlin to whom he was married for 36 years...and separated
from...until the time of his death.
He also had 10 of his own children
along with one which he adopted.
Mickey Rooney...we'll
never forget him.
Why?
He made us
laugh...and...cry
because
He knew how
to...

On a Show"
