A Merry Story at Christmas

Twas the Night Before the Journey

It was evening at the North Pole
And while the world would rest
An old gent boarded a sleigh
For his grueling yearly quest.

The reindeer were ready...
The elves worked all night
And a heavy sleigh steadied
For a long evening flight.

Off in the yonder
With a red nosed creature to lead....
The night's journey began
In heart rendering speed.

There were millions to see
So many places to go...
Each year always more...
No time to be slow !

On Dasher and Prancer...
While the kids would sleep
Down and up each chimney
Never making a peep.

He placed his gifts
Under a carefully lit tree
For those who'd been good
The next morning to see.

But before he would leave
He would gaze under each tree
Crunching on a cookie thinking...
It's all because of me !

As he jumped in the sleigh
To continue the night
He stopped for a moment
To reflect on the sight.

Below him was a world
Filled with many schemes...
Yet God had allowed him
To fulfill a child's dreams.

Let's close the year with something new...TELLING THE FULL STORY

When Lies are Believed

Do you know what happens when you lie most of the time?

I'll tell you...you start to believe the LIE is the TRUTH !

...and a perfect example is this MINIATURE GOLF COURSE when they realize the FULL COST of this venture and how it's being disguised with a bogus petition that conveniently leaves out the FULL TRUTH with FULL COSTS.

Our community has been LIED TO again and again, the latest of which are a bunch of people gathering signatures about a Mini-Golf course.

700 people signed this thing and yet there is not ONE who can actually tell you how much the total cost is going to be !

These people haven't a clue as to the total cost of this venture...yet they have the audacity to ask you to sign something that you haven't any idea as to its cost.

This is what they should be giving any person who signs something without knowing its full cost.

There's another word that can be used...SCAM.

Talk about "seniors" being "easy marks"......these petitioners are SCAMMING their own neighbors...

...and whether it's intentional or unintentional....

...a SCAM is a SCAM.

No one knows the full cost of this venture....yet people have blindly signed it.

Why ?

Because someone told them it was FREE...as if anything is free in this world ???

That's right...LIES...who some might look at as "stretching the truth", but nonetheless,  A LIE IS A LIE.

We did some homework trying to find out just what people were being told BEFORE they signed a petition that supposedly has close to 700 signatures.

When they were approached for signature, they asked, "What about the cost?"

And the answers came back similar to the nonsense that was spewed at the Property and Grounds Committee a number of weeks ago.

"It's in the budget"

"It's free"

and...that's A LIE  !

When Anthem Today's Rana Goodman confronted the Mini-Golf sponsor about cost at the previous Properties and Grounds meeting...he danced around the answer like a bear in a circus tent trying to come up with anything that avoided the word "cost".

"Asset Enhancement Fee" ...cried the blogger.  It's there to be spent.

Therein lies the LIE...and a board member clearly stated...

IT WAS A LIE.

It's big money when you sell your home...and..

THAT'S THE TRUTH !

...and people that want your money who don't tell you the full truth...are also HUCKSTERS in addition to being LIARS .

They're LIARS because they know that they can't get what they want...by telling the full TRUTH !

And there is only one way to fix this form of LIE...

...something I've preached for years...to deaf ears...to those who are being duped about how much is spent by FOOLISH PEOPLE for FOOLISH and costly projects....

...you remove obstacles which create LIES...

...the best example of which is...

Telling the full truth...and letting the cards fall as they will.

Tell people the TOTAL COST of construction,  architectural fees, concrete, demolition, landscaping, irrigation, insurance, annual maintenance, association liability, etc.

Don't let someone tell you that you can't be sued if someone is injured....

...no matter who wins or loses...it costs money to defend a lawsuit.

Just WHY was that not placed on the petition?

Simply stated, the individual who SPONSORED IT DIDN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW, and those who don't disclose those costs when they ask you to sign any such petition are either UNAWARE of the costs, or when confronted with the what they might actually be....WON'T GIVE YOU AN ANSWER.

And you know what words come up again, when people ask you to sign something without knowing all the facts ???

Chances are...YOU'RE GOING TO BE SCAMMED.

In this particular case these "scammers" cling to....

THE "CURSED" ASSET ENHANCEMENT FEE !

This fund has been abused for years and all it accomplishes is "legalized" waste...decisions in the hands of 7 people---actually only 4 of seven people.

Is there ANY PERSON in this community who enjoys an association grabbing .33% of the proceeds of a house sale?

Just how much is taken from YOU when you SELL ?

At $200,000, that's $660.00.
At $300,000, that's $990.00.
At $400,000, that's $1,320.00
At $500,000, that's $1,650.00.

...and the amount of the actual fee paid grows as a home appreciates !

Is that FREE ?????

Each and every year, approximately $300,000 is received...and spent on questionable new items, when it is placed into a capital improvement fund, when it could be used for day to day operating expenses.  IT COULD ALSO BE USED TO REDUCE OUR ANNUAL DUES ASSESSMENTS...or...ELIMINATED COMPLETELY.

And we are only one of a FEW COMMUNITIES who assess this fee !

And now...there's this Liberty Center project that is going to tap that CURSED FUND again...it's just a matter of how much !

Want to stop lies about spending and put the decision of what is, and what is not, a proper expenditure, in the hands of those who are making the deposits...namely YOU and ME ?

Easy...elect a board that will CONSIDER IT A TRANSFER FEE, and VOTE that they WILL NO LONGER ACCESS IT.

Then...when questionable items need approval, the decision is NO LONGER IN THE HANDS OF a FEW,  but requires a VOTE of the ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP for a SPECIAL ASSESSMENT !!!

That would mean Finance = Efficiency.

...AND completely eliminates LIES as to where the money comes from to build senseless projects when it's spent !

Feel as I do?

Then make this question the first one you ask of any candidate that will run for our board.

A Tasty Delight Close to Home

A Different Perspective for Vic’s

Over the previous year, one of our often debated issues has been our SCA restaurant Vic’s.  One side says good and one says not so good as a business decision by our board.  Among the issues were:  the lease and the terms, the initial deal for rent, the cost of preparing the restaurant for opening, the discounts to residents, the new lowering of the rent to further subsidize Vic’s for survival, the hours to open and the list goes on.
Let's forget about all those for a few minutes.

The following comments are not meant to address any of the business issues for neither Vic’s nor SCA.

My wife and I finally decided to have a meal at Vic’s and not think of the issues that have been recently bantered around.

When we arrived at 6:30 PM on a Thursday, there were about 30 people seated around the restaurant.  We had a nice table that was one row from the windows and had a nice scenic view of the strip. We had immediate service that continued throughout the evening.

We both ordered the Pork Chop entrée.

The waiter started with Hot Rolls on the table followed by a house salad all included with the dinner. All nicely presented definitely to our satisfaction.

Our main course selection was a winner.  The Pork Chops were outstanding. The menu describes them as “Broiled 12oz. frenched double boned center cut pork chop on top of Grandma’s famous stuffing.  Topped with a roasted caramel apple and a butter whiskey broth.”

They were cooked perfectly and everything came HOT. Nice flavor and a delicious caramel apple on top. Grandma’s stuffing was outstanding.

My wife has a glass of house wine and I had a well drink.  Since it was happy hour 2 drinks totaled $8.32.  We then got a 15% resident discount on the entre.  Our total before tip was $53.86.  Service was excellent throughout the meal.

No doubt that the price was VERY fair for this meal.  Hot, quality food with great flavor and presentation.

We will be returning to Vic’s for additional dinners based upon our first experience. I will leave the other issues to be debated by others.

Part 8 of a Series of 8 MEDICARE

This is the final article written by Gavin Walker, a member of the Henderson Senior Citizens Advisory Commission.

We at Anthem Opinions want to sincerely thank Gavin for taking the time to author these articles in assisting the senior members of our community as to the Medicare choices available to them.

It’s Time to Decide: Medicare Open Enrollment

(Part 8 of a Series of 8)

Medicare Open Enrollment ends December 7. It’s time to make your Medicare decisions for 2014 if you haven’t already done so.

Depending on your current coverage and your needs, you may decide to:

 -          Change the way you get your Medicare benefits

 -          Switch from one Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plan to another

 -          Drop prescription drug coverage completely

 -          Do nothing and keep the coverage you have

You can get your Medicare benefits in two ways—either through Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or through a private Medicare Advantage plan. Original Medicare is administered by the government. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide all the coverage that Original Medicare Parts A and B do. Many also include additional benefits, such as drug coverage and vision and dental care.

Changing the Way You Get Your Coverage

To switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare, simply notify the plan that you want to disenroll. Your coverage will automatically revert to Original Medicare. Make sure you do your homework and that you feel confident before you make this switch. If you change your mind, you may have to wait until the next Medicare Open Enrollment to re-enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.

If you go back to Original Medicare, you may also want to consider adding a standalone prescription drug plan (Part D) to your coverage. Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Original Medicare does not cover prescription drugs. It’s important to note that you cannot be without creditable drug coverage for longer than 63 days without incurring a premium penalty if you decide to get it later.

Many people also add a Medicare supplement insurance plan to help with some costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.

To leave Original Medicare and enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, all you need to do is sign up for the new plan. You don’t have to tell Original Medicare about the change, however, you should receive confirmation that you have been accepted into the Medicare Advantage plan.

Switching to a Different Private Medicare Plan

To change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another or from one Medicare prescription drug plan to another, you can just sign up for the new plan. Typically, you are automatically disenrolled from your old plan. You may want to notify the old plan about the change, just for good measure. But it’s not required. You should receive confirmation that you are accepted into the new plan.

Take Action

It’s important to take time to review your Medicare coverage each year. You may decide to make a change or not. Either way, you may rest easier knowing that you gave due consideration to your needs and choices.

Finding and Comparing Medicare Plans
(Part 7 of a Series of 8 Articles)

You may decide that your current coverage still meets your needs for 2014. If that’s the case, you’re done! You don’t have to do anything more during Medicare Open Enrollment. Your coverage will continue automatically in 2014.

Be sure you understand any coverage or cost changes your plan may have made for 2014 before making your final decision. You can review these in the Annual Notice of Changes (ANOC) you received from your plan.

If you’re not sure yet, whether you want to change your coverage, then you may want to learn about the Medicare plans offered where you live.
You may be looking for a Medicare Advantage or a Medicare prescription drug plan, depending on your needs. These plans are offered through private insurance companies.

Each plan has a geographic service area where it operates. You must live in a plan’s service area in order to enroll in the plan.

How to Find Medicare Plan Information

You may have many plan choices, depending on where you live. You can use the Plan Finder tool at Medicare.gov to look for plans offered in your area.
There is a link to the tool in the resource list at the end of this article. This may be a good first step, since you can get a whole list of plans offered by many companies.

How to Compare Medicare Plans

Carefully review the terms of any plan you are considering. Plans may change coverage terms and costs from year to year, so you want to make sure you have the most current information.

Here are a few questions you will probably want to answer “yes” to for any plan you may want to enroll in:

Is your provider in the plan network, if there is one?

Can you use your preferred pharmacy, if you have one?

Are your drugs on the plan formulary?

Are you comfortable with the expected out-of-pocket costs?

It may take some time to understand plan costs. You may want to estimate what your costs would be with each plan or combination of plans you’re considering. Create a scenario or take a situation from your own health care experience and compare what you would pay with each coverage choice.
Here are some costs to consider:

Monthly plan premiums
Annual deductibles
Copays/coinsurance
Annual out-of-pocket maximum
Emergency care fees
Annual pharmacy deductible
Prescription drug costs

Medicare Open Enrollment ends December 7. You have just a couple more weeks to make your decisions and change your Medicare coverage choices, if you choose.
