Las Vegas Loses a
Legend
As you drive down Las Vegas Blvd and
see what will hopefully someday be "The Echelon"...
... on that unfinished property,
once stood a landmark in Las Vegas, the Stardust
Hotel.
...and somehow, whenever I would
drive down Las Vegas Blvd. seeing the distinctive sign with the many stars, I
always had a belief that each star represented a legendary performer who
graced visitors to our city with the finest entertainment in the
world.
That hotel and sign are gone now;
only a memory to the millions of visitors who would always cherish "Old
Vegas".
And yesterday...as the original sign
sat amongst the many others that once graced the Las Vegas Strip...I
could picture one those stars on that legendary sign, slowing dimming with
perhaps a tear in memory of a woman who once made it glimmer each
night.
We lost
Edyie Gorme on Saturday, August 10th,  just 6 days short of what would have been her 85th
birthday.
I, like millions of others,  saw
"Steve & Eydie" so many times on television; I bought their records, and had
the privilege of seeing them live...at The Stardust.
As a matter of fact, she and her
husband were the last performers at the Stardust when it closed on October 28,
2006.
They loved to banter with each other
on stage, but that "bantering" would also last for 55 years of successful
marriage to Steve Lawrence.
Eydie's recording of "Blame It on
The Bossa Nova" will forever be associated with that
dance....
but...
...perhaps one song, more than
others,  Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme performed together, best describes them
to their many fans..."I Want to Stay Here"...
It's always been my
favorite.
Our condolences to Steve Lawrence
and their son, David, and to all of Las Vegas, in the loss of this marvelous
lady.
She will always be remembered for
the joy she brought to our city.
