Let me start by saying I am not in favor of
subsidizing a for profit entity. I believe there are a number of other
options available to the association.
Here is the role I believe the board should play, regarding the
restaurant, as we transition to self management.
The board should be setting the goal, as an
example:
“To have a food service venue operational as of
January 01, 2017.”
Then the board sets the objectives.
As an example:
“The general manager shall determine the
methodology to explore all food service options available to the
association.”
This methodology should include but not be limited to, determining
the type of food served, the days and hours of operation, etc.
If the general manager determines a
subsidy from the association is necessary, then that subsidy would need to be
within the budget guidelines for the calendar year.
Then the board would get periodic reports as to the progress of the
general manager achieving the objectives that would lead to the ultimate
goal.
The general manager would then make its recommendation to the board
on what food service would best serve the association.
At that point the board would have a say as to the choice.
It is my position the board should have no involvement in the search of the proper food
vender.

Has anyone ever seen a side by side view of the difference in cost between using a management company and self management?
Has anyone seen a budget for cost of self management?
Do we have a right to see that?
Just the health insurance costs for Sandy and her family and the fact that we also have to offer the same benefits to the rest of the full time employees must be staggering.
How much are we paying the CFO?
What about an HR individual?
First, let me say that I am a recent subscriber to the Anthem Opinions and am finding it to be quite interesting and eye-opening.
After reading about the long time issues with the restaurant space, I have a suggestion--let's contact McDonald's to see if they are interested in leasing the space.
It is obvious that the SCA residents have no interest in supporting any type of "fine" dining establishment on a regular basis. Even I must admit, that after a $30 tip and tab for two lunches and two ice teas, I was neither impressed with the meals, nor the overall service, and vowed not to return.
But a McDonald's would draw support from all of the nearby communities up here "on the hill" since there isn't one even remotely close by. And, it won't need a drive through lane, or need to be open 24 hours a day. Just think, a place close by to bring the grandkids, get a quick bite before meeting the guys for a game of pool or early round of golf, or a snack before heading to the local casino. Public access (with appropriate signage) could be limited to one of the side doors, while SCA residents could use the interior access from the clubhouse. I don't see this idea as being any different than the McDonald's that is inside the Walmart space. Another plus factor might be that some SCA residents might be interested in working there as a part time job.
Kind of a win-win situation, don't you think?
I agree totally with Barry's assessment of Restaurant options. However, I firmly believe that gambling machines at the bar should not be overlooked as an additive to your suggestions.
Not only would enhance bar/restaurant participation, it would also be a substantial revenue builder.
